WHAT’S NEW?
During the 2008 season JHA under went some extensive restructuring in order to provide our clients with more convenience and more service while avoiding any further increases in our pricing. We now book fewer camps each week leaving us with an even higher ratio of spare camps to camps booked. We have done away with the need for clients to overnight at our float plane base prior to being flown into camp. We supply all of our camps with fresh produce flown in from Montreal, and last but certainly not least we have a JHA representative (my wife Amanda) greet each and every client upon their arrival in Montreal in order to prepare each of them for their hunting and/or fishing trip by issuing them hunting licenses and answering any questions or enquiries they might have prior to their departure from Montreal. In return this allows us to fly our clients directly into camp upon arrival at our float plane base. Clients can expect to be at camp and hunting the very same day they leave Montreal! We accomplished all of the above without having to raise our pricing by operating our own private charter flight from Montreal. By flying our own private charter it allows us to decide which float plane base to fly into (Lac Pau or Schefferville) which is dependant on the average distance of the hunting camps we are using at that time to the float plane base. By doing so we not only shorten the mileage flown into most camps which saves us thousands of dollars in float plane flying but we also increase our payloads into camp, decrease the chance of being delayed due to poor weather conditions and we are able to have our clients flown in and flown out of camp in the shortest amount of time possible. In the past it was relatively common for us to fly out as far as 212 miles to our furthest camps to the West of Schefferville which could take as much as 4 ½ hours! By having the option of using Lac Pau those same camps are within120 miles! The charter flight actually waits on the tarmac at the airport until we have 5 groups of hunters “who have finished their hunt” return from camp, we can normally load and send the charter back to Montreal the same day as our clients return from camp which eliminates the need for clients to overnight at the float plane base on the way in or on the way out. *Of course weather conditions must permit us to fly in and out of camp but with that being said in 2008 we never once had a client require an overnight stay throughout our entire season! 2) Addition of A 2nd Tent Camp(s) Along Quebec/Labrador Border. It was back in late September of 2006 that Richard spotted thousands of George River bulls migrating through an area 150 miles North East of Schefferville along the Quebec/Labrador border. Unfortunately it was a little too late in the season to consider applying for an authorization to set up camp as the caribou were spotted three days before the season would end but we certainly didn’t waste any time applying for the area the following year. In 2007, after receiving an authorization for two tent camps, the first tent was set up on a beautiful crystal clear lake which we now call “Lake Amanda”. As luck would have the caribou once again migrated through Amanda Lake at the end of the season in 2007 but this time we were ready for them and a group of 6 hunters were flown in to take advantage of the situation. They all tagged tremendous bulls. 2008 was a different story though, as just 2 days before the season opened hundreds of big majestic bulls made their appearance and they kept coming and coming and coming for 6 weeks straight! Amanda Lake ended up being JHA’s most productive camp with plenty of trophy quality bulls to choose from. Plans are now in progress to put up the 2nd tent camp in 2009 which will be located just north of Amanda Lake and called “Sawyer’s Ridge”. 3) US and Canadian Veteran Discount As of Jan. 1st 2009, we are offering FREE travel insurance (up to a maximum of $400) to all veterans who served in the US or Canadian armed forces, and to all those who are actively involved with the armed forces. This is our way of saying thanks!
